The best way to get people to love vegan food is… a cupcake!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is my favorite dessert cookbook – or wait – is it Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar? Well, get both just to be on the safe side. I think the best way to show people how great vegan cooking can be is the bring them a cupcake with a smile. This is the secret weapon for vegan diplomacy that every animal activist should have.
The golden vanilla cupcake is the most basic and yet the most versatile. I have used it with different extracts and even made a 9″ layer cake with it. So good! My other favorites are the Chocolate Stout, Mucho Margarita, Coconut Lime, Brooklyn Vs. Boston Creme Pie. I love that the recipes do not use egg replacer, but use alternatives to getting fluffy cupcakes that hold together nicely.
My baking heroes!

I loooooooooove this book. I’m not much of a sweet eater so when I’d seen their vegan cupcake book I thought this would be a good idea. Though I haven’t tried every recipe yet I have to say every one I’ve tried has been fantastic. I don’t know why people freak when they hear something is vegan but yes even those people drool when I mention I’ve got cupcakes. I’ve made the margarita, rosewater, peanut butter, chocoate, chocolate with oreo frosting, and vanilla cupcakes to date and I’m always impressed. The ingredients have been easy to find, the instructions easy to follow and the results are yummy! My criteria for a great cookbook!!!
Excellent!

I haven’t gone through the entire book of recipes, but I tried the basic chocolate and the pumpkin chocolate chip cupcakes. They are so awesome, it’s unbelievable. The frosting is so good too … mmm. I’ve had vegans, vegetarians, and non-vegetarians eat them, and they’ve all unanimously said that they were moist, delicious, and you couldn’t even tell there were no dairy products used. Even my grandfather, who says like ten words a day, commented on them, which is a big deal.
I thought the pumpkin ones were going to be a one time thing for Thanksgiving, but wow, they turned out so well that I can’t wait to make them again. And I can’t reiterate how delicious the basic vanilla buttercream frosting is.
Since I’ve been vegan for a couple of years, and hadn’t had a real cupcake for a while before that, I thought maybe I thought they were really good, but no one else would. Like I said above, everyone who has tried them has loved them.
For the frosting, others said not to use the soy milk. I don’t use the soy milk solely because other reviewers have said not to, and it turns out great. Maybe it’s better with the soy milk, maybe it’s worse … for now, I’m sticking to leaving it out
Also, another tip: if you have fresh vanilla beans, scrape the pod and add the flecks to the batter and the frosting. I think it tastes great and it’s aesthetically pleasing as well when you see the dark flecks in the white frosting.
Highly recommended!

This is definitely a “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” cookbook. My daughters and I enjoy trying these recipes and I am attempting to convert some of them into a wheat free option. We were just invited to a vegan cupcake and champagne party (love the combination) so we are thinking of going with the Hazelnut cupcakes.

Toddler Approved Cupcakes!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Oh My Goodness! These cupcakes are amazing.
We were recently instructed by my 2 year old son’s doctor to restrict his dairy intake.
I was SO worried about what to do for his upcoming birthday.
Not anymore. We checked out the book from the library and made the basic Golden Vanilla cupcakes with Chocolate Buttercream frosting as our test batch.
The only words out of his mouth for the past three days have been “Mommy, I want another cupcake”. (To be honest, that is the same thing I was thinking.)
I gave some to neighbors and friends who also loved them.
Some of the responses were “Wow! You know how to cook hippie food!”
“These are really good, how did you get the cake so moist?”
“This chocolate frosting is great”
I placed my order today so I can have this cookbook within arms reach.
Now if I can only find some recipes for dairy free ice cream that are this good…..
The Greatest Cupcakes Ever!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is the BEST cupcake book ever. I have tried many of the recipies and variations and have always recieved an overwhelmingly positive respond from people trying them. Most people are amazing when I tell them they are vegan. Not having dairy products seems to make a lighter and very velvet cupcake. Also great if baking for kids taking to school as many kids these days can’t eat dairy.
AWESOME RECIPES!

This is one of the most-used cookbooks I own, and it the results never fail to impress. I am not a vegan, but these recipes are as good as any non-vegan baking. Many people have a prejudice against vegan food, but if you didn’t tell them, they’d never know these rich, moist cupcakes didn’t contain butter. Also great for the lactose-intolerant. Great pictures, easy-to-follow directions, fun ideas. You will not regret buying this book.
Disappointing recipes
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I’m not a vegan (yet) but I am trying REALLY hard to be one. I love butter, eggs, and anything that’s baked using them.
After the great reviews I’ve been reading about this book, I thought it was worth trying their recipes. I really wanted to like this book. I dreamed of making vegan goods and giving it to my non=vegan friends.
I’ve done 3 so far (+2 of frosting) and sadly I’ve been a little disappointed. Both versions of the “yellow vanilla cupcakes” did not taste great and were too “muffiny” in texture. The peanut butter cupcakes were OK for me, but everyone else that tried them did not like them (the texture was fine though). I think maybe they’re too “molassy”…. I don’t know.
The “to-go” buttercream was also not good. The only thing that I LOVED and plan on keeping was the “chocolate mousse” frosting. I DO NOT like “buttercream” frostings in general and this frosting (with not shortening or butter) was very good (silky, rich, consistency sturdy enough to pipe). For the price of the book (around $10) I think the book was worth it because of this recipe and because it’s really made me think of alternatives to doing vegan baked goods.
I will continue trying recipes from the book and I hope I’ll be rewriting this review with more positive notes!
Out of this world.

This Isa’s book of cupcake recipes is out of this world. This is one of those books where the fact that the recipes are vegan is incidental–the cupcakes all taste wonderful! Everybody will like these cupcakes, vegan or not. There are so many creative and easy recipes, there’s something for everybody.

All I can say is I love, love, love this book! My son cannot have gluten, eggs, or dairy. Of course, that makes baking very hard for birthdays, holiday, etc. But this book Rocks! They have simple chocolate or vanilla recipes, but they also have more “fun” ones like Margarita Cupcakes. I made those for my daughter’s first birthday (she was born on Cinco de Mayo) and they were a huge hit. One guest even made them for her boss’s party a couple of weeks later. Everyone raved about them.
I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just vegan/vegetarians. It is great!
perfect for kids with food allergies
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
when i found out my baby daughter had dairy and egg allergies, i despaired of ever finding great baking recipes. and sure enough, everything i tried was uniformly icky…until i found this cookbook. now, three years later, i have secured my reputation as THE cupcake baker of minneapolis, even among carnivores. now even “regular” people ask for these recipes and serve them at their kids’ birthday parties.
Cute Book!

I haven’t tried any of the recipies yet, but they look super good! Easy instructions, ingredients that are easy to find. It pleasently suprised me by having two recipies for glueten free eaters, but I wish they had put in a few more!
Delicious, Acessible, Sassy and Simple!

I am a fairly newbie (4 months and counting) “almost” vegan (still eat fish)and have been purchasing as many cookbooks as possible to get a handle on how to veganize my diet with a particular focus on baking. SO grateful to have discovered Isa and Terry’s vegan cookbooks (have Veganomicon and Vegan with a Vengeance). They are all informative, interesting to read, sassy (!) and simple. I love love love to bake and am fairly adept at revamping a recipe to be more healthy (i.e. swap applesauce for oil, whole wheat pastry flour for all purpose etc) but was at a loss on how to veganize anything.
This little cupcake handbook is absolutely fantastic. the size is compact and small; you can throw it in your bag and read it on the subway! The pages are sturdy and with appealing glossy photos. the forward is very succinct, well organized, interesting and contains a great executive summary on the ins/outs of vegan cupcake baking. There is a very wide variety of flavors and textures represented so you wont get bored and there is something for everyone. The recipes are very simple and once you gain confidence; they are easily adaptable to make it more your own. i saw some negative posts about how the recipes are not healthy and contain too much refined sugar. so change it then! I have decreased the amounts of sugar to suit my less sweet taste, sub’d agave for white sugar, used whole wheat pastry flour exclusively, swapped out soy milk for almond milk -all with great results. just experiment!
I highly highly recommend this book. I’ve tested a few recipes on my non-vegan husband who has huge sweet tooth and he gives it a double thumbs up. I’ve already pre-ordered the cookie version!
Happy baking!

I have made these cupcakes for a few parties and bake sales (profits going to Peaceful Prairie Sancutary) and now I am getting requests. I am wondering if people invite me over just so I’ll bring cupcakes!
Changed my baking forever!

This review is a long time coming since I have had this book for sometime now. This is a must have for anyone interested in taking their vegan baking to the next level as well as any beginner who is looking for the basics. I love this book, I use the techniques all the time and am so grateful that I found it (and so is everyone else who gets to it my cupcakes)!
I would reccomend this cookbook to EVERYONE (vegan or not)
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I am dairy/soy allergic, yet I crave the delicious desserts that are forbidden to me. THIS cookboook had allowed me to have EASY, tasty, dairy-free desserts and treats that regular meat-eating, dairy swilling folk try and LOVE and then can’t believe that they’re VEGAN!!!
What I love about this cookbook is that they give pictures of every cupcake. The book has wonderful, sometimes humorous, easy to follow directions, and most can be whipped up in about 20min, bake another 20, cool, frost and you’re ready to go.
If you’re vegan, you probably have all the ingredients in your kitchen already, and even if you’re not, there isn’t usually much to buy (except a lot more cupcake papers.)
Some recipes may need a little tweaking if like me you don’t use the soy products and use rice/coconut milks instead. For instance, if using rice milk for the Coconut Pecan Frosting , use less rice milk (a technique to use also with the Chocolate Mint Cupcake frosting,) use more cornstarch, or add more shredded coconut (or a combo of all three.) Other than that, the recipies turn out perfect every time. I haven’t botched a single batch, and there is a growing request list for my cupcakes.
I would say this is the cupcake book to end all cupcake books, and if you’re looking for easy cake desserts with wonderful bakery-type buttercream frosting, this is the cookbook for you.
Note: I don’t write reviews, but this is the only thing so far where I felt I HAD to write a one.

Although these are vegan cupcakes, are they wheat/gluten free, too? Thank you to future reviewers or other reviewers who include this information.
The best cupcakes I’ve ever had!!!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I would just like to say that this is by far the best cupcake recipe book out there. I purchased this book in preparation for my daughter’s 1st bday and thus far, my cupcakes have turned exceptionally delicious, fluffy, and moist. Baking these cupcakes makes me want to open a vegan cupcake shop.
Isa… your cupcakes rock!

I love this book, and have used it several times over. My daughter’s first birthday just passed, and I used these recipes to make a 3 layer cake, and it worked out great. Also in addition to that, when I used to work at Starbucks, I wow’ed everyone with the chai cupcakes (99% of the people that worked at my store were omnivores) and they had no idea that they were vegan. And I also made some pumpkin spice cupcakes (I had a whole can of pumpkin I had to get rid of, I think my husband is getting sick of it) This book is great for an indulgence every once in a while, or even if you want to make some vegan treats or cakes, as the recipes also work out as well as cakes(I used the golden vanilla cupcake recipe in a round 9″ pan)
Excellent Recipes taste just like non-vegan!

I love to bake, I am not a vegan, but I bake for those in the family that are. At my grandaughter’s birthday party, they could not get over the fact that they were actually vanilla vegan cupcakes, they tasted exactly like my normal vanilla dairy cupcakes. The icing was even the same consistency. The chocolate chip pumpkin cupcakes with the cinnamon icing are so moist, I made those for Thanksgiving. This book is amazing! I will be buying the cookie book this week to bake with my grandaugher.
Oh. My. God.

Let me start by saying, we are vegetarian but not vegan (we do dairy). I got this as a gift – and I am a junky now. My just turned 6 year old loves mint chocolate chip icecream. So for her birthday I made the mint chocolate cupcakes. The kids at the party scarfed down these cupcakes like there was no tomorrow. Usually I see kids eat just the icing off the top – but these kids were licking the chocolate off the cupcake wrapper!! One of the kids even said “You MADE these???? Wow!!”
This has become my new favorite cookbook. Thank you Vegan Cupcakes, for taking over my world!!!
Can’t live with out this book

Amazing recipes, made three different kinds for my son’s first birthday and the party guest couldn’t believe that they were all vegan! Can’t live with out this book!
Cupcakes for everyone!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I love this book. Vegans know that vegan baking can be challenging, but with this book you will be making vegan cupcakes that even non-vegans will love. I have had many non-vegans comment that they actually prefer these cupcakes to their dairy infused counterparts on account of taste, texture, and fluffiness – and many have asked for the recipe for the vegan frosting which is delicious – better than the “real” stuff. The recipes are uncomplicated and delicious. Many recipes for vegan cupcakes leave you with cupcakes that are too dense, too firm; these cupcakes are more cake-like than any other vegan cupcake recipe I’ve tried – and the variations are endless and creative. With this book never be without a party pleasing dessert. Go ahead -impress your friends – you know you want to.
tasty!

The GOOD:
- these cupcakes are tasty. i made the peanut butter cupcakes and gobble gobble we ate them in less than 24 hours. yes, that is how my family rolls. we just cannot help ourselves. i use almond milk because i cannot have soy milk or milk milk currently. cupcakes still turn out great. i have not tried too many of the recipes though, but i am still glad i bought this book.
The BAD:
- a lot of the recipes call for soy yogurt. i tasted it and soy yogurt tastes awful. i guess the cupcakes may still turn out okay but i could not try it because it ended up making my baby gassy in the worst way. sigh. so if you are allergic to soy and milk, don’t get this book.
The UGLY:
- well my main complaint or rather, what i like least about this book that i actually like A LOT, is that a lot of the recipes ask for soy margarine and shortening. i only cook with butter or oils because margarine and shortening still gross me out. i would like this cookbook to offer an oil alternative since they obviously will not use butter. i like baking with oils because baked goods seem to remain more moist for longer.
OVERALL:
- i still love this book. i like the way the recipes are laid out, i like the pictures, i am able to substitute real butter for shortening or what not when it asks for it ( i think i have done this already…sorry i’m a tired mom and cannot remember
) this is a great buy! book is well-priced to just buy it anyways.
I bring these vegan cupcakes to parties
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
People absolutely love them. The frosting is fluffy and they look gorgeous. They taste rich and satisfying. The book inspires creativity while baking! And to think that no animal was harmed in the making of these cupcakes. AFTER people eat them and rave about how good they are…I then tell them that they are vegan. I also love buying this book as a gift for vegetarian friends dabbling in veganism.
